Close to General Bajwa… Enmity with Imran Khan… Know about Aseem Munir, who is going to become the new Chief of PAK Army

New Delhi: After much uproar and controversy over who should become Pakistan’s next army chief, Lieutenant General Asim Munir has been nominated for the post, arguably the most powerful position in the country. He will assume office on November 29, when incumbent General Qamar Javed Bajwa leaves office at the scheduled end of his 6-year term, which includes a 3-year extension. Lt Gen Asim Munir is currently the Quarter Master General at GHQ. He is said to be close to General Bajwa. As a brigadier, he was a commander in the Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) when Bajwa was the commander of the X Corps.

FCNA comes under the command of X Corps. Lt Gen Munir is a graduate of the Officers Training School, Mangla, and is the senior-most in the current generation of 2-star generals, all of whom are from the same batch of the Pakistan Military Academy, Abbottabad. By all accounts, Munir is an “outstanding military officer” and Shuja Nawaz, author of the recent book Crossed Swords, based on a detailed account of the internal role of the Pakistan Army, has called him “A Straight Arrow”. Told.

Asim Munir was the head of Pakistan’s ISI
Yes, Munir has served as the head of Military Intelligence and head of the ISI, a rare combination in the Pakistan Army. He was made the Director General of Pakistan’s Military Intelligence in early 2017, and held the position for a period of 21 months. In October 2018, he became the Director General of ISI. However, Munir’s tenure as Director of ISI was the shortest ever. Qamar Javed Bajwa had removed him from the post at the behest of the then Prime Minister Imran Khan. It is said that the then Prime Minister got angry with him after Munir allegedly brought to his notice the involvement of Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi’s family in corrupt practices. After removing Asim Munir as Director General of ISI, General Bajwa posted Munir as Corps Commander Gujranwala, from where he moved to his current posting at GHQ, Rawalpindi.

Will Imran Khan be irritated by the appointment of Aseem Munir as Pak Army Chief?
This was one reason why the appointment of the new army chief had become so controversial and politically charged. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and his brother and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (who is living in self-exile in London and is often consulted on the work of the government) announced that the seniority principle would be strictly followed in appointments . This meant Aseem Munir, because in terms of seniority, his number would have come to become the Army Chief. The purpose of Imran Khan’s long march from Lahore this month is to pressurize the present government to hold early elections. Imran and his party PTI are sure that they will win. But it also meant pressuring the government to agree on a ‘consensus’ chief of the Pakistan Army.

Can Imran Khan stop Asim Munir from being made Pakistan Army Chief?
He may make a last-ditch effort through President Arif Alvi, who has also been a member of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. While the Shehbaz Sharif cabinet has cleared Asim Munir’s name, President Alvi has to sign off on it, which is usually a formality. If the President chooses to defer his signature on the appointment letter of the new army chief, it will come closer to Munir’s date of retirement on November 27, when his four-year term as lieutenant general is about to end. By becoming the COAS, which has a tenure of three years, Munir’s tenure would automatically get extended. Whether Imran Khan would like to go down this route, or whether President Alvi would like to wade into controversy over this important matter, is uncertain.
