Cape Town. MI Cape Town on Wednesday announced the signing of England fast bowler Jofra Archer as a wildcard for the inaugural season of the SA20 League, starting January next year. Archer has not played international cricket since March 2021 due to a long-standing elbow problem, following which a stress fracture occurred in the lower back. Apart from MI Cape Town, Sunrisers Eastern Cape have included uncapped South African batsman Jordan Harman and are the only other team to bring a wildcard entry.

He played for the England Lions in a match against the main England team in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Archer was signed by Mumbai Indians in the last IPL auction for Rs 8 crore despite the franchise knowing that he would not be available. He has been retained for the 2023 season. Archer was signed by the franchise in the 2022 Mega IPL auction for Rs 8 crore.

Mumbai Indians in IPL and SA20 team MI Cape Town are owned by the same group. A spokesperson for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that the English board has given NOC to the Barbados-born bowler, who has been out of action for more than 17 months from July 2021.

Despite providing NOC, the ECB is examining his fitness. A roadmap has been put in place for his full return to international cricket. An ECB spokesperson said, “He will play a number of games upon his return to competitive cricket.” The 26-year-old Archer is likely to feature in the three-match ODI series between South Africa and England to be held in South Africa from January 27 to February 1.
