External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters that Zakir Naik is an accused and declared proclaimed offender in the Indian legal system. He said that as far as Zakir Naik’s participation in the FIFA World Cup is concerned, the matter has been raised with Qatar.

He told that Qatar has informed us that the controversial preacher and fugitive Zakir Naik was not given any invitation to participate in the FIFA Football World Cup 2022. It may be noted that Zakir Naik allegedly left India in 2016 and went to Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residence, after the Indian Anti-Terrorism Agency lodged an official complaint in 2016.
