Thiruvananthapuram: Shashi Tharoor said on mayor controversy- ‘I was the first person to ask for resignation’

Thiruvananthapuram: Extending his support to the ongoing protest against Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that some people are deliberately ignoring his stand on the matter. Hitting out at those accusing him of not supporting the United Democratic Front (UDF) protest against the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, Tharoor said he was the one who first sought the resignation of Mayor Arya Rajendran. The mayor of Thiruvananthapuram is embroiled in a controversy over her purported letter seeking a ‘list’ of CPI(M) workers for appointment to temporary posts in the civic body.

Tharoor said, “I was the first to ask for his resignation. They are probably not paying attention to it or watching the news. The news of my asking for his resignation on November 7 was almost everywhere. The party knows my stand on the matter.” He said, “I have taken my stand after understanding and thinking about the matter. Due to my work and many duties, I was not getting time to come here, but as soon as I got time, I came here and announced my support for this protest. Some remarks were made indirectly about not supporting.

Extending his support to the protest, Tharoor said, “Seeing the mayor’s conduct and the police action against the Congress protesters, one word comes to my mind, disgusting.” Tharoor said, “She is everyone’s mayor.” Like I am everyone’s MP. However, it appears from the letter that she is working as a representative of a party while holding a constitutional post.
